How it all started: The story of Josephine Suleiman- CEO & Founder

After working in the Banking Industry for 18 years, I retired in the year 2000 and in 2006 I joined the Healthcare Industry as an Administrator of a level 4 Hospital. My job was clearly cut out , to revive the hospital and make it profitable. I worked in that hospital for a period of 9 years. During that time, we used to get expectant mothers from this particular informal settlement  in Nairobi (Sinai Informal settlement) coming to seek delivery services from the hospital which was 7 KM away. For a period of 2 years, together with my team, we took outreach services to that community to try and understand why they were coming that far. We learned that, despite the fact that there were clinics within their area that were offering delivery services, they were looking for a place where, they were treated as human beings, treated with dignity and a place they could feel safe and cared for during the birthing process. The owner of the Level 4 hospital where I was working was not interested in expanding and more so, to an informal settlement, considering the many challenges associated with these environments.

In December, 2012, Olivelink Healthcare opened its doors within Sinai to try and address the gaps that had been identified. The needs were bigger than what we had originally thought, and we had to quickly expend our range of services to accommodate the community’s needs. Nine years later and we have served over 115,000 patients, supported over 4,000 women with safe deliveries and impacted more than 550,000 lives. We are proud of how far we have come and plan to continue with our mission of providing informal communities with affordable, good quality healthcare.
